What airport do you fly to for the Algarve?
When planning a trip to Portugal’s Algarve region, one of the first decisions you’ll need to make is choosing your entry point.
We know that you’re excited to land in Carvoeiro, and you’re probably searching for "Airport Carvoeiro”. But you won’t find one because there’s no airport in Carvoeiro.
Instead, all flights to the Algarve arrive at Faro Airport (FAO), the region’s main airport.
This guide covers everything you need to know about traveling to Carvoeiro, Lagos, Ferragudo or any other destination in the Algarve.
What’s the gateway to the Algarve?
During the summer, when the Algarve is busiest, airlines often add extra flights to meet demand.
Once you land, you’ve got plenty of options to get around. Renting a car is a great choice if you want to explore at your own pace. If you’d rather not drive, taxis, ubers, and private transfers are available for a smooth trip.
If you’re on a budget, buses and trains can take you to Algarve towns from Faro, but we often recommend against it as they’ll take longer than driving or taking a private transfer.
How to reach Carvoeiro from Faro Airport?
If you’re not renting a car, you can choose between a taxi or Uber, pre-booked airport transfer, or a combination of train and bus.
To take the train, you’ll first head from Faro to Estômbar-Lagoa station, then finish the trip with a taxi/uber or bus ride to Carvoeiro. While this option takes longer, it’s more budget-friendly.
How far is Faro Airport from other Algarve towns?
- Carvoeiro: 65 km (40 miles), about 45-50 minutes by car
- Albufeira: 45 km (28 miles), about 35–40 minutes by car.
- Lagos: 90 km (56 miles), around 1 hour by car.
- Portimão: 70 km (43 miles), roughly 45 minutes by car.
- Tavira: 40 km (25 miles), just 35 minutes by car.
- Vilamoura: 25 km (16 miles), about 25 minutes by car.
If you’re not renting a car, you can choose between a taxi or uber, pre-booked airport transfer, or a combination of train and bus, though they’ll take longer due to multiple stops.

Can we travel to the Algarve from another airport?
It’s just a two-hour drive from the Algarve, which makes it a solid substitute.
The easiest way to get to the Algarve from Seville is to rent a car and drive east. If you prefer public transport, there are direct buses to Faro and Albufeira, though the journey takes 3–4 hours.
All flights take you to the Algarve!
But if you’d like to explore more of Portugal along the way, trains from Lisbon, buses, or driving offer excellent alternatives to flying directly into Faro.
For those looking to combine their trip with a visit to Spain, Seville Airport is a great backup option, just a two-hour drive from the Algarve.
No matter how you choose to get there, the Algarve is a dream destination with its beautiful coastlines, quaint little towns, and perfect weather.
So it doesn’t matter how you get to the Algarve. The journey itself will be part of your unforgettable adventure.
