When’s the best time to visit the
Algarve?
Pretty much, most of the year. But let us expand on that.
Our personal favorites are the months June and September. But don’t miss out on the winter months, from November to February. Sure, it’s cooler but there are a lot of sunny days with nice temperatures. Just remember to pack a sweater, pants, and a pullover for those cooler evenings.

Your guide behind the scenes
Hey friends! I’m so happy you’ve found my website 🙂
I’m your guide behind the scenes at Algarvista — a blog dedicated to all things Algarve.
I’m half Portuguese, half Belgian, and grew up in Carvoeiro. So, it’s safe to say, I know this area inside and out — its beautiful beaches, the best restaurants, the quaint little towns, and quiet spots.
Frequently asked questions
Answers to the most common questions about the Algarve.
Which town is the best to stay in the Algarve?
We’ll be honest: we’re a little biased here. But for good reason. Our top pick is Carvoeiro — a classic Portuguese resort town located in the heart of the Algarve, surrounded on either side by sandstone sea cliffs. It’s charming, walkable, and perfectly placed to explore the rest of the region.
Do you need a car in the Algarve?
Yes, you do. Having a car will be your best friend in the Algarve. Sure, there are alternatives — Uber, buses, trains — but for exploring other parts of Carvoeiro and the rest of the Algarve, a car is a must. It gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace, with no taxis, no bus schedules, and no train waits. Plus, the Algarve has plenty of off-the-beaten-track spots, hidden beaches, and quaint villages that you simply can’t reach without one. If you’re only here for a couple of days, an Uber will do. But if you really want to explore? Rent that car.
What airport do you fly to for the Algarve?
Faro Airport (FAO) is your best bet. It’s the closest airport to towns like Carvoeiro and Lagos and has flights from all over Europe, thanks to airlines like Ryanair, TAP Air Portugal, Brussels Airlines, Transavia, and British Airways. From Faro, most popular destinations are within easy reach — Carvoeiro is about 45–50 minutes by car,
What is the best month to visit the Algarve?
Pretty much most of the year, honestly. Our personal favorites are June and September — warm enough for the beach, without the peak summer crowds. But don’t sleep on the winter months either. From November to February it’s cooler, but there are plenty of sunny days with nice temperatures. Just remember to pack a sweater and a pullover for those cooler evenings. July and August are buzzing with energy but also the busiest and most expensive. So it really depends on what kind of trip you’re after.
How many days in the Algarve is enough?
Honestly? Never enough. But if we have to put a number on it: we recommend staying 5 to 7 days for the best experience. That gives you time to explore a few towns, hit the beaches, do a hike or two, and actually relax. Spoken as true travel enthusiasts though — the more the better. A long weekend will give you a taste, but you’ll leave wanting more. Consider yourself warned.
