Frequently asked questions
Answers to the most common questions about the Algarve.
Do I need to make reservations?
For high season (July and August), yes — always, especially for weekend evenings and anywhere with a sea view. In shoulder months (May, June, September, October), reservations are wise for popular spots but walk-ins still work midweek. Off-season (November–March), most places are happy to seat you on the spot.

Are restaurants in the Algarve expensive?
Not really. the Algarve remains one of the more affordable corners of Western Europe to eat well. At a local tasca you’ll pay €10–18 per person including a glass of wine, a mid-range restaurant runs €25–40, and fine dining starts around €60+.
What food is the Algarve known for?
The Algarve is best known for cataplana, a copper-pan stew of seafood, chouriço and white wine that’s become the region’s signature dish. Beyond that, expect fresh-grilled fish (especially sardinhas, dourada and robalo), polvo à lagareiro (octopus with olive oil and crisp potatoes), and arroz de marisco. Sweet tooth? Try Dom Rodrigos, an egg-yolk-and-almond confection wrapped in colourful foil, or finish with a shot of medronho, the local fruit brandy distilled from arbutus berries up in the Monchique hills.
