If you’ve been searching for the most popular attractions in the Algarve, chances are Carvoeiro Boardwalk or Algar Seco must have come up.
And for good reasons. These natural wonders showcase the Algarve’s breathtaking beauty. Over time, erosion shaped the landscape into rock pools, caves, windows, and platforms by the sea, giving it a moon-like appearance.
Another interesting thing is that the linoleum rocks of the Algar Seco even have fossils from sea life that lived 24 million years ago, but visitors come here simply to marvel at the stunning views.
In this guide, we will cover everything you need to know to fully experience this lovely tourist spot in the southern Algarve.
The Carvoeiro Boardwalk is a picturesque clifftop path that begins at the Nossa Senhora da Encarnação fort and stretches approximately 570 meters to a group of captivating limestone formations called Algar Seco.
This elevated wooden walkway gives beautiful views of the coastline, making it a short yet enjoyable stroll filled with plenty of beauty.
Midway along the Boardwalk, you can descend to explore additional rock formations and take a stroll around these natural wonders.
And when you’re ready to relax, you can head to Boneca Bar at the end of the walk.
Algar Seco is a fascinating spot along the Algarve coastline.
On one side of the Algar Seco, you’ll see a beautiful cave called "A Boneca”. The cave looks like a small room with two large openings that frame the ocean-like natural balconies. The name "A Boneca", meaning "The Doll", comes from the seaside exterior, which resembles a doll, with the two cave arches forming the eyes. Hence, the name.
To reach this point, you'll need to descend a long flight of steps, as the boardwalk itself doesn't extend down to the base of the cliffs. Once there, you can relax at the Boneca Bar, a great setting for drinks and light meals.
On the other side, the eastern side of Algar Seco, there's also an exposed sinkhole where seawater has created a shallow saltwater pool, but only during the high tide.
The whole scene is truly magnificent in the whole of the Algarve, so make sure to check it out during your vacation.
The Nossa Senhora da Encarnação Fort is a historic and picturesque site at the start of the Carvoeiro Boardwalk. This 17th-century fort was originally built to protect the coastline from pirate attacks.
The 1755 earthquake destroyed much of the fort, so it doesn’t look like it used to. The chapel was restored in 1852 and adds a lovely touch to the area. The fort is right on top of hills, which gives amazing views of the coastline and the ocean. However, the fort is just a passing site along the boardwalk.
The walk is about 1.2 km and takes about 10 minutes. But you’ll likely stop and spend more time admiring the beauty of the rock formations along the way.
There are buses and taxis available in Carvoeiro that will take you to the Boardwalk and Algar Seco. But we highly recommend taking an Uber, rented car, or a taxi for a hassle-free experience.

Parking is available near both ends of the boardwalk.
At the western end, close to the fort, there is a small car park. On the eastern end, near Algar Seco, a larger car park is available, which is popular with RV owners. If the designated car parks are full, there is free roadside parking available near Algar Seco.
But no matter how close you park, you’ll still walk to reach the boardwalk, so be prepared for it.
The walk is suitable for all ages. Many are traveling solo and many folks come with their families, thanks to the well-maintained wooden path.
Honestly, we’d say that Carvoeiro Boardwalk and Algar Seco are worth visiting all year round. The views and experience are always stunning, whether you’re here in winter or summer.
That said, morning and late afternoons are particularly special. The natural play of light during these times is very pretty and unique, which adds an extra charm to this place. Plus, you’ll avoid the midday heat and busy crowds.
But if you’re curious in general about what’s the best time to visit the Algarve, or how the Algarve is at different times of the year, we have covered these topics in depth, so make sure to check those out.
