Ferragudo is a small, yet mighty village located on the banks of the River Arade. We’d say that the best way to explore the beauty of this village is by foot. Some things to do here would be wandering the cobbled streets. Every corner is like a postcard, so bring your camera. Or, if you need a break from exploring, visit, Praia dos Caneiros.

Lagos is another fascinating town in the Algarve region. You can explore Lagos’ Old Town with its cobbled streets and historic sites. Or for a change of pace, visit Ponta da Piedade, which is a 4-minute car ride from Lagos town center. It’s a headland with a cluster of rock formations above the Atlantic Ocean, a fascinating tourist attraction.

Here’s our recommendation. If you’re staying in Carvoeiro (and you should), it would take you around 1 hour to reach Praia do Amado. Catch some morning rides or soak up the sun, then hop in the car for a quick 8-minute drive to Praia da Bordeira. Here if you want, you can hike a challenging 4.6-mile loop trail.
Want to keep moving? Head 35 minutes north to Praia da Arrifana. This beach is lined with fantastic restaurants where you can grab a delicious lunch and refuel for the afternoon.
If you’re considering extending this plan, travel to Praia do Odeceixe which is around 45 minutes further north. This is another stunning beauty, perfect for exploring nature at your own pace.
The rugged Algarve's West Coast is completely different compared to the southern part of the Algarve. It offers a thrilling escape for surfers, hikers, and anyone seeking an off-the-beaten-path experience.
The most famous points here are Praia do Amado, Praia da Arrifana, Praia da Bordeira, and Praia do Odeceixe. The best thing is, that they’re all reachable from Carvoeiro, making it easy to plan a one-day itinerary and explore the wild west coast in all its glory.

Now just because we have been only talking about stunning beaches of Algarve, doesn't mean that’s the only thing you can do in Algarve. Here are some other sporty activities you can do in the region.
5. Let's get active: sports in the Algarve
Exploring the coastline of the Algarve on foot is a great experience. The Seven Hanging Trail is super popular. And you can do a mini hike at Algar Seco, starting from Carvoeiro. But honestly, you can hike pretty much anywhere along the coast. We've covered the best hikes in the Algarve.

The western part of the Algarve arguably offers the best base for surfing, especially Arrifana, Aljezur, and Sagres, which are popular destinations for surfers. The wind is favorable and the swell window is ample. Plus, there are plenty of long reliable waves, all of which make the area highly favorable for surfing. Don't worry if you're a beginner – numerous experienced surf schools in the area can get you riding waves in no time.
